During a dinner party, I was seated next to an 81 year old lady who was known as Ouma. She was telling me about her many aches and pains. She was not able to dress herself, get up, stand up, or walk by herself and was feeling so frustrated by it all.
I asked her if she would like to be prayed for with laying on of the hands. Sue, our gracious hostess, explained to her what that meant and led her to a bedroom, where we could pray with her privately and not disturb others at the party.
The three of us prayed together. Firstly, we prayed for her arms which she could not raise up to touch the back of her shoulder or back of her neck. I prayed and did as the Holy Spirit directed me.
Then, I asked her to raise her arms up and she responded by saying “I can’t do that”. I explained to her that before we prayed, that may have been true, but now she would be able to do it. As she began to raise her arms you should have seen the look of surprise on her face. She crossed her right hand to the back of her neck extending it to the left shoulder. Then she did the same thing with the left hand. She appeared so surprised and confused. Almost immediately however, she began to panic and asked, "Can we pray Hail Mary?"
After we prayed again and encouraged her to believe it was true that God had healed her arms, she beamed with joy and thanked God.
Then we asked her, "What else would you like God to heal for you? Her immediate response was, "My knees."
Once again I prayed and did as I felt the Holy Spirit directing me. Then I turned to her and said, "Now, stand up by yourself." To dispel all doubts I said to her, "You can because God has healed your hips, legs, knees and feet. I encouraged and assured her she would be fine and that she would not fall or hurt herself.
She stood up. "There, you did it!" Sue and I said at the same time."Now, lift your knees alternately like marching." But once again doubt and fear got the better of her and she responded that she couldn’t do it. I said to her, "Okay, Ouma, I want you to just walk around by yourself. Sue and I will stand beside you to be sure you will be fine, so don’t be afraid."
As she began to walk by herself, strength came into her body and she walked naturally without a cane or any support from us. I cannot describe in words the expression on her face and how she thanked God for miraculously healing her.
Even though she is elderly and the body gets weaker naturally, God still healed her and gave her strength and ability. Sometimes we simply accept our struggles and suffering, but we don’t need to. Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever and he still heals those who come to him. |
